It is an understatement to say that Stan Ayeroff is a guitar player nonpareil. His musical accomplishments are legend. Stan fell in love with swing music and went on to write books on Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, and Benny Goodman. He has performed with Texas R&B singer Delbert McClinton and was co-musical director (with Danny Elfman) of the original "Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo." Stan has been the Orchestral Supervisor for Rod Stewart, Page and Plant, and The Who. He conducted a chamber orchestra for Heart's concert video, "The Road Home," on Capitol Records.

What people say

Folk Music Center, located on Yale Avenue in Claremont, California, is a true gem for music enthusiasts. Established on August 12, 1958 by Charles and Dorothy Chase, this local business has a rich history that adds to its charm.

The journey of Folk Music Center began in a humble back room of Boots Beer's Real Estate Office on Harvard Ave. Despite the initial skepticism from Boots himself, Charles and Dorothy persevered and started their venture with just $2000 borrowed from Dorothy's brother. With a small collection of records, books, strings, and instruments, they set out to create something special.

It didn't take long for the Folk Music Center to gain attention. Within months of opening, Mike Fay loaned them a sitar, tablas, and a tamboura for an international show. The Claremont Courier captured the moment with photographs and ran a story that brought the store significant publicity.

As the store grew in popularity, it moved to its own space on 1st Street. Here, Dorothy's father affectionately known as "Grandpa" Udin took charge while Dorothy taught guitar and banjo lessons in their home's living room. Meanwhile, Charles worked diligently repairing instruments in the basement. The store quickly became a hub for musicians and music lovers alike.

In 1961, another exciting chapter unfolded with the opening of the Golden Ring music cafe on Harvard Ave. This establishment became one of Southern California's earliest folk music venues during its five-year existence. It hosted legendary artists such as Gary Davis, Brownie McGhee, and Sonny Terry.

Today, Folk Music Center continues to thrive as a haven for folk music enthusiasts. Its rich history is evident in every corner of the store. From its extensive collection of instruments to its knowledgeable staff who are always ready to assist customers with their musical needs or provide insightful advice about various genres of folk music.

Whether you're an experienced musician or a curious beginner, Folk Music Center welcomes you with open arms. Step inside and immerse yourself in the world of folk music. Discover unique instruments, browse through an impressive selection of records and books, or simply engage in conversations with fellow music lovers.

Folk Music Center is not just a store; it's a place where the love for music is celebrated and nurtured. Pay a visit to this Claremont treasure and experience the magic for yourself.
