GOLUBOVIC is my family name. ♥️

When people tell me they’re proud of how far I’ve come, or congratulate me on something I’ve achieved, I can’t help but feel undeserving of their words. 😭

I constantly think about how I’m nowhere near where I want to be, forgetting just how unlikely it is for someone born into extreme poverty in former Yugoslavia to end up where I am today: owning award-winning vegan restaurants in one of the biggest cities in the world, creating the life I once only dreamed about.

The truth is, the odds of this happening were incredibly small.

And you may be surprised by what I’m about to say, but I owe so much of it to the gay in me.

Straight me probably wouldn’t have spent day and night dreaming of escaping Montenegro.

Straight me might have accepted the world exactly as it was and never questioned it.

Straight me might have grown up believing women belonged at home, because that mindset is still common where I’m from.

Straight me might not have understood LGBTQ+ rights the way many straight people back home still don’t.

Straight me could easily be MAGA and might have laughed at compassionate people like vegans instead of becoming one.

Straight me could have easily become a completely different person because that’s what the environment I was born into was trying to teach me.

But the gay in me fought ALL of that.

ALL OF IT.

The very thing I once begged God to take away became the thing that pushed me to challenge everything, dream bigger, love deeper, and build a life that felt true to who I am.

So no matter how much I hated it when I was a child, no matter how desperately I wanted to be someone else, today I am forever grateful for my gay self for NEVER GIVING UP.

Last week I threw the ceremonial first pitch at the Chicago White Sox Pride Night. ⚾️🏳️‍🌈

And for once, I’m allowing myself to say it:

I am proud and I am gay.

I bet nobody could have predicted this wildly unlikely outcome when I was born.

But here we are.

Huge thanks to my people for being there for me that special night and big thanks to Chicago White Sox for having me. 🥹

GRATEFUL! 🙏
