As a kid, 31 Flavors, as we called it then, was the family go to place, where I would faithfully order my Chocolate Chip Mint and mom, Butter Pecan. Maybe it was the name or that mom refused to share, probably the former, but I never tasted it. Some years on, Butter Pecan is also one of my favorites. On the menu today is a brand new Softserve Pie, Butter Pecan. This one's for you, mom!

New Flavors this week:
-Matcha - Nutty, grassy, mild earthiness with a sweetness running underneath
-Roasted Strawberry - Strawberries are slow cooked down to a concentrated puree, then folded into the base. Deepens the flavor and pulls the sweetness forward
-Dark Chocolate Truffle - Rich dark chocolate, deep cocoa, a hint of roasted espresso behind it
Fun Fact: Real matcha is grown in the shade. The leaves spend their last weeks before harvest covered up, which is what turns them that electric green and what keeps the flavor sweet instead of bitter.

In New Zealand they call honeycomb candy "hokey pokey," and it's basically the national ice cream flavor. Whole country, one flavor and we respect the conviction. Honeycomb is on the menu this week!

This Mother's Day, serve a little thank you with our Lemon Raspberry Softserve Pie. Lemon Bar Softserve, raspberry jam, sugar cookies, graham cracker crust, whipped cream and raspberry crumble. A small, sweet way to say I love you.

Two delicious new flavors of the week:
-Chai Latte - “Softserve infused with black tea spiced with cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, black peppercorns, star anise and nutmeg”
-Brown Sugar Vanilla - “Tastes like chocolate chip cookie dough, minus the chocolate chips”
Fun fact: Vanilla is the second most expensive spice in the world after saffron, and here's why: it's a Mexican orchid pollinated by one particular bee that refuses to live anywhere else. Madagascar grows most of the world's supply now, but every single bean there has to be hand pollinated, a technique invented in 1841 by a 12 year old enslaved boy named Edmond Albius.

Growing up, a road trip to Palm Desert with my grandparents meant one thing: Shields Date Garden. Specifically, the date shake. That deep, caramel sweetness was the whole reason to make the drive. I have been trying to recreate it ever since.
This week, Date Shake is on the menu and I think we nailed it!
And because one great flavor deserves company, Midnight Chocolate is here too. Deep rich chocolate, none of the bitterness.

The first winter after Rose and I opened the Silver Lake shop, we were deeply concerned. Foot traffic drops when it gets cold, and a Softserve shop in January is a real test of faith. Our theory was simple: people don't stop eating dessert in winter, they just stop coming in as often. We needed to make something they could take home, put in the freezer, and enjoy on their own time. When it came to building the recipe, we went straight to what we knew worked, our most popular Softserve flavor, Corn Almond, and our most popular topping, Honeycomb candy. That's how the Original Fried Softserve Pie was born! It worked better than either of us expected. We now keep a rotation of six on the menu, but the Original has never left. Some things come out of necessity and end up becoming permanent.

Two new flavors this week. Rau Ram: the Vietnamese herb you've eaten a hundred times without knowing its name, peppery and lemony and somewhere more interesting than cilantro or mint. Passion Fruit Orange: aromatic, floral, sweet-tart, balanced with fresh squeezed orange juice. Find them at all three locations while they last!

Holidays are one of our favorite things. Not because of the occasion, but because of what they do, pull people together, slow things down, and create the kind of moments worth showing up for. Getting to be part of that table is something we take seriously and have a lot of fun with.
This Easter, we made a Carrot Cake Softserve Pie. Carrot cake Softserve layered with cream cheese icing and brown sugar pound cake, topped with whipped cream, house made pineapple jam and graham streusel in a graham cracker crust. We hope the Easter Bunny appreciates the carrot situation.
