Banana bread is younger than you think. Bananas only became cheap in America in the early 1900s, and once every kitchen had a bunch going brown on the counter, somebody had to figure out what to do with them. Baking soda had just made quick breads possible, the flour companies started printing recipes to sell more flour, and by the 1930s banana bread was in cookbooks everywhere. Chiquita put it on their own materials in the fifties and that was that. It became the most beloved thing anyone ever invented out of fruit nobody wanted. Banana Bread Softserve is on the menu now, ripe banana leading, brown sugar underneath, cinnamon and vanilla to finish.
