FOSTER A FURRY FRIEND FOR THE FOURTH
The 4th of July is super fun—but not for our pets. They don’t like big booms and screaming rockets. The LB Animal Shelter admissions surge prior to and directly after the 4th as they try to house all of the pets that have fled to escape the ruckus. But the shelter is already over capacity. And that’s where you come in.
YOU can foster a dog or cat (for a minimum of 30 days), and help make space for all of the displaced animals during the Independence Day holiday.
While fostering, the shelter will provide you with food, bowls, beds, litter pans, crates, and any necessary medical care. Shelter staff then sets about getting those buckets of love back to their rightful owners and forever homes.
IMPORTANT: “Foster the 4th” is coordinated by appointment only.
Email [email protected] to schedule one, or visit: www.longbeach.gov/acs.

WE LOVE YOU, DAD!

Long Beach celebrates Juneteenth bigly, and this year is no exception. Though the official holiday is June 19th, the party will take place this year on Saturday, June 20th (tomorrow!), at MLK Park (1950 Lemon Ave.) from 9 AM to 5 PM. This family-friendly fandango will feature live music, soul food and BBQ, and a wide assortment of fun activities, including arts and crafts, games, and face painting.
Though slavery was abolished in January of 1865, slaves in rural Texas had not been informed. Juneteenth commemorates the day when Union soldiers, discovering these still-indentured people, explained to them that they were free.
Juneteenth became a national holiday in 2021, and Long Beach has observed and commemorated it in LB style for the past five years. How ‘bout joining in the fun? From the festival at MLK to all of the reflective programs taking place around the city, we can commemorate emancipation while honoring and embracing African-American art, food, and culture.

IT'S DAD'S TURN!
Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 21st. Hey, know what your dad really wants you to get him? No. No, not that either. And no golf calendars or clocks with plastic tools on them. And for the love of Ike, DO NOT BUY HIM A TIE. He hasn’t worn one since 1995. He wants you to take him to Berth 55 and buy him a swinging seafood dinner.
Got sibs? Well, get them in on this stellar idea. But keep in mind that if YOU pick up the check, you will finally be his favorite. For that day. Probably. Are you seriously still debating this? Free parking, fresh air, and awesome seafood? You think he’d rather have a shirt?
Look, here’s your chance to get this Fathers’ Day right. Don’t blow it. Not again. And bringing him here is a boffo opportunity for you to make him proud. Sure, there are other ways, but they’re harder to accomplish and not as yummy. Nuf said. See you then!

Justin Rudd, a true Long Beach hero and the city’s unofficial patron saint of community engagement, is celebrating his birthday on June 6th! Know what he wants this year? He wants you to gather up some of your gently used clothes and shoes and donate ‘em.
June 1st through 7th marks the 13th Annual Clothing & Shoe Drive for the Homeless. You can drop them in the chute to the left of the double doors at Christian Outreach in Action, located at 515 E 3rd Street, OR walk them into the office of the Bay Shore Church at 5100 E. The Toledo before 2 PM any day during that week.
For the past twelve years, this drive has collected and distributed truckloads of goods to various homeless service agencies in the LB. Let’s keep up the good work.
