THE UNDEAD KNOW HOW TO LIVE IT UP

Just because you or your loved ones are mostly-but-not-quite-dead doesn’t mean you don’t deserve a great party now and then. You do. So, the folks at Shoreline Village, as they do each year, lined up another doozy. They know, when given half a chance, you and yours always “rise” to the occasion. Party on, Zombies.

The Shoreline Village Zombie Walk and Halloween Party returns on Sat, Oct 17th. So have yourself a great meal at Berth 55 and a delightful cocktail and Queen’s Wharf Lounge, then head over to the boardwalk for this fabulous flesh-eating fandango. Use your brain (or someone else’s). You don’t want to deal with the undead on an empty stomach.

Festivities start at 7 PM and rock ‘till 10 PM, and admittance to this scary soiree is FREE!

Enjoy DJs, vendors, stuff for the kids, and one super-creepy clown band. Do the clowns constitute live entertainment? You tell us. Sure, there’s a costume contest, as well as an assortment of photo ops with a wide array of camera-friendly monsters (those who cast reflections). And, of course, there will be a fortune teller. Did you even have to ask?

All of this leads up to the pièce de résistance: THE ZOMBIE WALK! It’s the highlight of the evening, with participating undead parading (slowly) along the waterfront.

Yeah, babies! Fall in queue and stroll the boardwalk in all your ghoulish glamor and fiendish finery. This fest is the living end! More or less. Okay, the living part is subjective.

FEST FEATURED LOTS OF LOVE AND A FEW FURRY FRIENDS

September 26 marked the first ever Berth 55 Furry Friends Fest! The heroes from Long Beach Animal Care Services (LBACS) brought out some adorable dogs and cats, and we were able to get homes for FOUR of those lovable souls. SCORE!

The day sparkled with ultra-groovy music courtesy of DJ Jack Pharaoh and the Red E Stage, the yummiest tacos from El Jefe Mexican Grill, Pet Supplies Plus (one of our star sponsors) providing TWO gigantic gift baskets for the raffle (one of dogs and one for cats), and vendors galore!

VENDORS GALORE: To thrill taste buds, KoaKai Shave Ice was on-hand, along with Cafablanca Gourmet Coffee Bar, Pop-O-Licious ’N More Gourmet Popcorn, and El Jefe Mexican Grill serving up the yumminess. And for pet shopping pleasures, Pet Supplies Plus was there, as well as Flea Treats, Sucely d Sam Art (pet portraits), Woof Tails Pet Products, Garry Lemongrass (handmade pet clothes), and the most excellent Doggo Nice Day Dog Bakery.

And the fun, fierce participation of the bad*ss Badfish Roller Derby gang skating their way through PA announcements added an extra splash of energy to an already magical afternoon. BUT it could be that our mascots Happy and Paws stole the whole show with their infectious joy and darling dance moves. You go, Happy! You go, Paws!

Because of this extraordinary, dynamic dream-team effort, we delivered as promised, expanding a few families and many more hearts. Berth 55 is, and will remain, committed to helping animal lovers and loving animals find one another, bringing together deserving parents with those patient pets waiting on a forever home. LBACS made that a little easier by WAIVING ALL ADOPTIONS FEES, just for the fest, which allowed folks to make that big decision with their hearts and not their wallets. Thank you, LBACS.

LBACS takes in between 5,000 and 6,000 lost and abandoned animals annually; animals who need medical attention, food, bedding, and care. It’s a lot. But when community steps up, good stuff happens. The community did. And will again.

The heroes from LBACS have committed to bringing out an assortment of adorable dogs, and a collection of kittens. And for that day only, they will be waiving all adoption fees! Thanks, LBACS!

Spend the day with DJ Jack Pharaoh and the Red E Stage, the Badfish Roller Derby Gals making PA announcements (on skates, natch), two mascots circulating for photo ops (a dog named Happy and a cat named Paws), and those adoption-ready bundles of love from the shelter ready for their close-ups.

THE CAUSE AND EFFECT OF CHARITY

Beginning September 24th, you choose a cause and watch the effects of your actions improve lives. Long Beach Gives is the LB’s annual online event that offers a cool way to give back and make a difference.

Your participation: virtual, physical, or monetary, will help Long Beach nonprofits while gaining them exposure to reach new donors. At the site, read about all of the amazing work these philanthropic organizations are doing here in the LB. With over 270 participating non-profits, finding something you’re passionate about is so easy.

Each year, they bring together Long Beach businesses and individuals to raise awareness about these nonprofits and the critical role they play in our community. The idea being that if folks knew about what these organizations are able to accomplish, more folks would get onboard.

Lasts year, LB Gives raised over $2 million dollars, and in the past 7 years, they’ve raised over $13 million! Whahhh? You GO, Long Beach!

Outreach takes shape myriad ways such as meals served to our food insecure neighbors through “Urban Community Outreach,” providing care packages for low-income seniors through “Heart of Ida,” which works to engage, feed, and clothe our elderly community, anti-bullying and su***de prevention efforts of “California Families in Focus,” and help placing Cambodian youths in jobs as part of the “United Cambodian Community.”

There are so many worthy causes under this umbrella that you are sure to find the one that speaks to YOU! Regardless of what program you champion, you are absolutely helping build a better city.
