We are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Rainer Schwarz, Executive Chef and Partner of Driftwood Kitchen and The Deck on Laguna Beach. More than a remarkable culinary talent, he brought together a rich cultural heritage and world-class experience to create unforgettable dining experiences for all who walked through our doors.

Born in Klagenfurt, Austria, Chef Rainer began his culinary journey at 15. His path took him to Switzerland, where he refined his craft and met Chef Joachim Splichal, whom he followed to California to work at Los Angeles’ renowned Patina and Pinot restaurants. He later opened Cienega at L’Ermitage, launching his career in the United States.

He went on to partner with restaurateur John Nye on Disney’s Mondavi Project in the late 1990s, followed by Vail Cascade Resort & Spa in Colorado, where they developed several successful concepts. Returning to Los Angeles in 2009, he worked with Chef Tim Goodell on Whist at The Viceroy Santa Monica and Public Kitchen & Bar at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Reconnecting with John Nye, they formed Sentinel Restaurant and Hospitality Group in 2013, which owns and operates The Deck on Laguna Beach and Driftwood Kitchen.

Chef Rainer’s philosophy centered on simplicity — letting the finest seasonal ingredients speak for themselves — while delivering the precision and excellence that defined his career. Both restaurants became among the region’s most beloved dining destinations.

Beyond the kitchen, he was deeply committed to his community, generously supporting nonprofit events and fostering a close-knit network of chefs built on collaboration and mentorship. That community proved especially vital during COVID, as chefs came together to support one another and those in need.

Chef Rainer’s legacy lives on in every dish and every guest experience he shaped. He believed deeply in hospitality as a way to bring people together. We are profoundly grateful for his lasting impact and will continue to honor his vision in all we do.

Our hearts are with his wife, Tasha, and his son, Max, during this difficult time.
