On this day, June 29, Joe Ercole and his friend Grace Ullery opened a sandwich and ice cream shop at 1101 Manhattan Ave. After Grace unexpectedly passed away a couple years later, Joe kept the place going, growing Ercole’s into an institution that’s embedded into the history of Manhattan Beach. Even though the Ercole family hasn’t owned it since 1952, the name lives on. And thankfully, so does this little neighborhood watering hole.

Whether you think it opened 1927 or know it was in 1929, it’s been here a long time. Almost a hundred years actually, and that’s an incredible feat. We’re gearing up for a big celebration and we hope you’ll be there to join us. Send us your favorite memories here or at [email protected].
