Memorial Day. It’s one of the few holidays about absence. About the people we wish were here, but aren’t.

For many of us, the empty seats are real. Today asks something difficult of us: not simply to honor sacrifice, but to remember the people behind it. Today asks us to look grief in the face.

So call your buddies today, but don’t let today be the only day. Set a reminder in your calendar to reach back out on an ordinary day, too, when someone least expects it.

The empty seats around us deserve more than just one day of remembrance. Semper Fidelis.

Today we stand shoulder to shoulder as Marines to honor
Lance Corporal Emilian D. Sanchez and Lance Corporal Andrew G. Matus,
2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, Echo Company,
who were killed in action on January 21st 2007

They were brothers before the title,
Marines before the moment,
bound by the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor
and the oath we all swore.

They walked the same ground, stood the same watch,
and carried each other through the hardest days, not for recognition,
but for the Marine to their left and right.

Though time moves forward, brotherhood does not.
Their names live on in every formation,
every birthday toast,
and every Marine who still answers the call.

Rest easy, brothers.
We have the watch.

’Twas the night before Christmas, somewhere downrange,
Not a damn thing quiet, just tension down-range.
Marines on the line with rifles locked tight,
Because the enemy doesn’t care what day’s on the calendar tonight.

Weapons cleaned twice, mags staged just right,
Sector of fire burned into memory and sight.
Cold chow, black coffee, jokes dark and dry,
Every Marine locked in, scanning the sky.

The Eagle, Globe, and Anchor heavy on the chest,
Earned the hard way, no shortcuts, no test.
Boots in the dirt, flak tight, helmet low,
Infantry Marines doing what few ever know.

No stockings. No trees. No warm place to be,
Just brothers on watch who refuse to break or flee.
And if rounds start cracking or the radio screams,
Every Marine moves without orders or scenes.

So tonight, while the world sleeps safe and warm,
Remember the Marines who stand in the storm.
No glory. No headlines. Just doing it right.

Merry Christmas to the Marines standing the watch.

This powerful documentary follows a brotherhood of Marines as they confront the lasting impact of war and the loss of their friend, Cpl. Jorge “JV” Villarreal Jr., a young Marine from the West Side of San Antonio. Through JV’s own footage, American Sons offers a rare and intimate look at the lasting wounds of war — and the continuous struggle to heal.
