Trump openly asked Bukele, the President of El Salvador, to build five more prisons, saying, “The homegrowns are next”—meaning he wants to send not just immigrants, but American citizens, to El Salvador’s notorious mega-prisons. These are the same prisons where Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident, is now trapped after being wrongly deported due to an administrative error—even though the Trump administration admitted he wasn’t a criminal and the Supreme Court ordered his return.
Bukele flat-out refused to send Abrego back, calling him a “terrorist” despite zero evidence and the fact that U.S. officials have acknowledged Abrego was deported by mistake. “How can I smuggle a terrorist into the United States? I don’t have the power to return him,” Bukele said, brushing off the Supreme Court’s order and making it clear that Abrego is never getting out. Meanwhile, Trump and his team are dodging responsibility, claiming it’s all up to El Salvador, even as Abrego sits in a prison infamous for torture and indefinite detention.
If this can happen to Abrego—an American resident with no criminal record—it could happen to any of us. Trump’s plan to export Americans to foreign prisons is a direct threat to our constitutional rights. If the government can strip away your rights and send you off to a foreign jail, none of us are safe. This isn’t just about one man; it’s about protecting every American from government overreach.
