It’s an honor to host Schurr High School’s Business Class for their annual visit to Ground Up.
As Schurr alumni, it’s a full-circle moment for us to welcome these students into a business we’ve built and share some of the lessons we’ve picked up along the way.
We remember being students with no clear idea of where the road would take me. If we can give these students a little inspiration, a different perspective, or simply remind them that there are many ways to build a future for yourself, then it’s time well spent.
Always grateful for the opportunity to come back and give a little of what I’ve learned. Go Spartans! 💚

Before Ground Up, Daniel and Ryan had good jobs, stable careers, and a pretty clear path ahead of them.
But they had a bigger question: what would happen if they actually took the risk and built something of their own?
They didn’t have some revolutionary business idea. They looked around their community and realized there was something missing… a coffee shop.
So they went for it.
10 years later, Ground Up is still here.
Sometimes the right idea isn’t the most revolutionary one. It’s the one that feels right for you and the people around you.

Coffee shops are popping up everywhere. ☕️
After 9 years, here are 3 things we’ve learned that we’d pass on to anyone building one:
1. Don’t open one because it’s trendy. Open one because you have a reason to exist.
2. Forget the gimmicks. Stay true to your perspective.
3. Build relationships with your community. Social media comes second.
We’re all trying to build something that lasts.

Plot twist: our Pumpkin Spice Latte wasn’t created in a boardroom. 🎃☕️
It was created by Scarlett, who wanted to make a PSL she’d actually want to drink.
She experimented with the recipe, tweaked it, tasted it, went back to the drawing board and eventually created the PSL we serve today.
No focus groups. No corporate strategy. No white-collar men deciding what people should like.
Just Scarlett making the drink she wanted to drink.
