What does it take to build one of the most craveable sandwich shops in the SGV?
We sat down with Henry, owner of Monty’s Alhambra and Monty’s Norwalk, to talk about entrepreneurship, community, and what it was like starting a business during the pandemic.
As a Montebello local and longtime Ground Up Coffee regular, Henry shares his journey, lessons learned, and why supporting local businesses matters.
Stories like these remind us that the San Gabriel Valley is built by people willing to take a chance on an idea and serve their community.
Have you been to Monty’s yet?

Montebello and the 323 have always been known for rich culture, community, and flavor. ☕️
9 years ago, we became Montebello’s first specialty coffee shop because we believed our community deserved high-quality coffee close to home.
Ground Up is proudly Latino-owned, locally owned, community-driven, and built for the people of Montebello, East LA, and the 323.
Whether you’re stopping by for your morning coffee, studying, working, or meeting with friends, this space was made for you.\

Remember when moments mattered more than perfection?
Before everything had to be polished, curated, and filtered.
This video was captured on an old camera as a reminder that the best memories aren’t always the clearest ones, they’re the ones that make you feel something.
At Ground Up, we believe coffee is more than just a drink. It’s conversations, routines, laughs, late nights, early mornings, and the people you share them with.
Here’s to capturing moments that matter. ☕️

Reminders from your neighborhood coffee shop:
✨ You don’t have to shrink yourself to make others comfortable.
⏳ Progress still counts, even when it feels slow.
🚀 The perfect time probably isn’t coming — start anyway.
💤 Taking care of yourself is productive too.
🌱 Everything meaningful starts small, from the ground up.
Coffee’s on. Keep going. ☕️

Some people see stickers as a mess. We see stories, crews, brands, artists, memories, and people leaving a piece of themselves behind.
So we started covering our fridge with them. A little collection of the community that walks through our doors every day.
Bring yours next time you stop by

Some people leave their hood. We left to discover what quality looked like, the kind of coffee, spaces, and experiences that made you feel inspired the moment you walked in.
But every time we found it, we kept asking ourselves the same question: why don’t we have this back home?
So instead of building somewhere else, we decided to bring it back to ours.
For the early mornings on Whittier Blvd. For the dreamers in Montebello. For the creatives in East LA. For the conversations after work in Monterey Park.
Ground Up was built to prove our communities deserve beautiful spaces, high quality coffee, and something we can be proud to call our own.
From the Ground Up.

9 years ago, Ground Up started with a simple idea: create a space where people from our community could gather, dream, connect, and feel at home.
Today, we’re celebrating 9 years of coffee, conversations, friendships, hard work, and growth. None of this would exist without every single person who has walked through our doors, supported us, shared our story, or made Ground Up part of their daily routine.
Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your lives and your community all these years. We don’t take it for granted.
Here’s to many more years of building together. 🤎☕️

At 15 years old, Nathan Loza is already creating opportunities for himself and serving the community he grew up in through Cart.
Stories like Nathan’s are exactly why we built Ground Up: to highlight the dreamers, creators, and young entrepreneurs coming out of our community. 💡

As a coffee community… we lost the plot.
This was never supposed to be about aesthetics. It was about slowing down. Connecting. Being present.
We’re bringing it back. Real coffee. Real space. Real people. ☕️

Not every cup is perfect. But every cup is real.
No filters, no fluff. Just the grind. ☕️

Some of us didn’t wake up to alarms… we woke up to voices, laughter, and the smell of coffee filling the house.
Those mornings didn’t feel like much back then. Now they mean everything ☕️

This place doesn’t run on hype. It runs on you.
The early mornings. The long shifts. The hands that build, fix, and keep things moving.
No influencers. No clout. Just real people, showing up every day.
Ground Up was never meant to be a “scene.” It was meant to be a place for you to breathe, to reset, to keep going.
Every cup we serve is a thank you. For choosing us. For believing in us. For building your life, one day at a time.
We see you. We appreciate you. This will always be your spot 🤎

Before the coffee, before the shop, there was belief. Ground Up started with support at home ❤️ This story isn’t just ours, it’s shared. ☕️

This one’s for the ones who don’t need all the extras.
A nod to an L.A. staple that proved you don’t have to do everything… just do it right.
We’re not adding new drinks every season. We’re not chasing trends.
We’re sticking to the classics. Keeping it simple. Keeping it consistent.
Because real power isn’t in adding more, it’s in knowing what matters and standing on it.
Just good coffee. Every day. ☕

Pros and cons of owning a small business part 3
04/07/2026
If you grew up in L.A. in the late ’90s or early 2000s… you remember this.
That little card said “Imagine the possibilities.”
At the time, it felt small but looking back, it meant everything.
We built a small library at Ground Up to bring that feeling back.
A reminder that there’s still more ahead of us.
And if you don’t find it here, it’s probably waiting for you at your local LA County Library.
Appreciate everything you’ve given the city 🤝🏽

We skipped the iced coffee… and went straight to cold brew ❄️☕
Smoother sips, bold flavor, zero bitterness.
Trust us, you’ll taste why.

Pros and cons of owning a small business part 2
04/02/2026
We’ve been told convenience means fast, close, and easy.
But what if that’s not really it?
What if convenience is the place that actually makes your day better… even if it takes a minute longer to get there.
No shortcuts. No rushing. Just coffee made right.

We know our coffee might not be the flashiest thing you’ll see today.
No crazy colors, no trends, no extras just for the look.
But that’s never really been our focus. We care about how it tastes, how it feels, and how it fits into your day.
Something you can rely on. Something that fuels you. S omething you come back to without thinking twice.
Alot of places chase attention. We’re just here to make good coffee for our people.
Simple on the outside… but there’s a reason for that.
