What people say
The Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, Inc. (BWL) is a remarkable organization that has been making a positive impact since its founding in 1975. It all began with a group of African-American women judges and attorneys who recognized the need for an organization that would address the unique needs and concerns of African-American women in the legal profession.
Through their dedication and hard work, BWL has grown and expanded over the years, becoming a pillar of support for black women in the legal field. One of their notable achievements was co-founding the Harriet Buhai Center for Family Law in collaboration with the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles (WLALA) in 1982. This center has become one of the leading providers of pro bono family law services in Los Angeles County, making a significant difference in the lives of countless individuals and families.
BWL's commitment to giving back to the community is further exemplified by their annual fundraising efforts through the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles Foundation. These funds are used to provide scholarships for second and third-year law students, helping to pave the way for future generations of black women lawyers.
In addition to their community involvement, BWL also plays an active role in promoting diversity and inclusivity within the legal profession. They were among the founding members of the Multicultural Bar Alliance, which brings together various ethnic minority bar associations. Through this alliance, BWL continues to provide a much-needed channel for networking, support, and advocacy.
The Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, Inc. stands as a shining example of empowerment and unity within the legal community. Their dedication to addressing important issues facing African-American women lawyers is commendable, and their contributions have not gone unnoticed. In fact, they were honored with the first annual Public Service Award by the National Conference of Women Bar Associations in recognition of their significant community contributions.
If you are a black woman lawyer or aspiring to be one, joining BWL would provide you with a supportive network of like-minded individuals who are passionate about making a difference. With their rich history and ongoing commitment to excellence, the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, Inc. is undoubtedly an organization worth supporting and being a part of.
