The topic of what type of art a Cappucino should come with has come up a lot recently, so we thought a post about it might be helpful. In an effort to please guests, some of our baristas have been doing latte art on traditional cappuccinos. While it was with good intentions, latte art is actually to be done on lattes, and cappuccinos are to have the traditional “Monk’s head” design, a white “cap” with a brown rim around it, which is their trademark. This is where the Cappuccino got its name, as the drink resembles the heads of the Capuchin monks in Italy at the time it was created. In order to create the proper cappuccino, the milk must be steamed in such a way that latte art should not really be possible. Therefore, when the baristas steam it in the manner necessary to create latte art, it is not really steamed as it should be for a true cappuccino. In other words, the milk for a cappuccino is texturally different from a latte.

So we have instructed all of our baristas to resume making the cappuccinos the traditional way with the white monk’s head cap, as they should be, and to let patrons know that the latte art designs will be seen on all of our Latte drinks, but not on cappuccinos. As a result some confusion has ensued, as people wonder why they are not getting the pretty, delicate design on top of their capps.

If you love the latte art designs, try ordering a small Caffe Latte next time- any type. Then hopefully our baristas can show you their skills! If you order a cappucino, what you will be looking for is a design like the one in this photo, which is actually just as challenging to achieve as basic latte art. That is how you will know your cappucino was made properly.
