It is with a heavy heart we share that Robert J. Morris, known to friends and guests simply as “Bob,” passed away peacefully at his home on April 13, 2025.
Bob Morris was a pioneering force in California’s restaurant industry for over five decades. He was the founder and creative force behind some of the state’s most beloved coastal restaurants, including the original Gladstones, The Jetty, RJ’s the Rib Joint, Malibu Sea Lion, and most recently, Paradise Cove Beach Café in Malibu. Throughout his storied career, Morris developed and operated over 25 restaurants, redefining the California beach dining experience and mentoring countless restaurateurs along the way.
Known for his warm charisma and signature hospitality, Bob was rarely seen without six of his signature gold coins in his pocket—tokens he would joyfully share with guests and strangers alike. His establishments were instantly recognizable for their vibrant atmosphere and signature desserts, including the legendary towering slice of chocolate cake. Bob had an uncanny ability to spot potential in people—what he affectionately called “bright eyes”—and he took great pride in helping others launch their own careers in hospitality.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Bob’s love for the restaurant world began with his Uncle Sonny, a manager at the iconic Jack’s at the Beach on the original Ocean Park Pier. His passion only grew with time, and his legacy continues to shape the dining culture of Southern California.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, Marion and Joseph Morris; his brothers, Harold and Bryant; and his son, Darren. He is survived by his wife and business partner, Kerry Edlund Morris; his son Timothy and wife Brittany; his daughter Melanie Morris Speiser and husband Robert; and his grandchildren, Sam, Max, and Charlie.
Bob Morris’ legacy of innovation, generosity, and family devotion leaves an enduring impact on all who knew him and dined in the restaurants he brought to life.
