Another special piece about us, thanks to Eric Licas and the LA Times...

"Regulars at the Spaghetti Bender came from all walks of life, including a former pro baseball player who often sought special treatment because of his celebrity status. But to owner Michael Hoskinson, the athlete’s business was no more important than that of any other local who has come in to unwind after work, celebrate a birthday, propose to their fiancé or even just settle on a reliable, lovingly prepared plate of lasagna because they ran out of time to make dinner at home.
“I would never put up with his s—,” Hoskinson said of the sports celebrity. “And he would come in and try to bluster his way in in front of all these people. And I go, ‘You know the drill. Go sit down. Have a drink at the bar. I’ll bring you a basket of bread.’”
The restaurant on PCH has been serving Italian comfort food for over 55 years, and Hoskinson said it has been an honor to feed and welcome people who make up the fabric of Newport Beach and surrounding communities. It thrived for decades without ever spending a penny on advertising. So, many were shocked when owners announced their decision to close the doors for good in a Facebook post on Feb. 19.

After the announcement, patrons immediately proceeded to book every reservation available through the restaurant’s final night of dinner service, which is this Sunday. And since then, Hoskinson has been fielding 30 to 100 calls and emails a day from longtime customers struggling to come to terms with the fact that the local fixture is going away for good.
“People have been panicking that they can’t get a reservation, and I’m having to sweet talk them off the ledge a little bit,” Hoskinson said. “It’s weird. It’s like people are going through the five stages of grief. There’s a lot of bargaining.”
A combination of factors led to the decision to close the Spaghetti Bender. Inflation in recent years has driven up the cost of ingredients, and so staying in the restaurant industry is “tougher than I’ve ever seen it before,” Hoskinson said.
Meanwhile, many of the staff working at the restaurant today have been there for decades, and Hoskinson described them as the soul of the establishment. Many key members of their team are at or near retirement age, and without them the restaurant simply wouldn’t be the same.

The closure comes three years after the death of the Spaghetti Bender’s founder, Joyce Hoskinson, Michael’s mother. Several longtime employees were named as beneficiaries in her will, her son said.
Joyce Hoskinson was the driving force behind the restaurant. And her son, working as a property developer by day and overseeing dinner service in the evenings, admits that he simply cannot devote himself to it the same way she did.
“My mom and I were best of friends, partners,” Hoskinson said, shedding a tear.
Joyce Hoskinson had been helping her parents run several other restaurants when she got the idea to open her own in the summer of 1969. The single mother’s ambition was something of an anomaly, as she went through 20 banks seeking a loan at a time when the idea of a young woman starting her own business was practically unthinkable. On one occasion she was chased out of a meeting by a lecherous banker who tried to make physical advances on her, Michael Hoskinson said.
The restaurant struggled in its first year until a glowing newspaper review turned things around. They developed a loyal base of customers made up largely of families. Michael Hoskinson as well as longtime manager Britta Pulliam both met their spouses while working shifts at the restaurant.

The family has been overwhelmed by a recent outpouring of stories, compliments, requests for their secret salad dressing recipe and to please squeeze in just one more party of two, for old time’s sake. It pains them to deny customers who have sustained them for over five decades, but Hoskinson, Pulliam and the restaurant’s head chef of over 40 years, Alphonso Gomez, want to ensure that the last meals they serve are remembered as some of their best.
“I want everyone who has dinner here to have a wonderful last meal, a great memory and not have us running around, sweating with food running an hour late,” Hoskinson said.
It’s unclear what will happen to the white stucco-walled building with a Spanish-tiled roof on PCH. Hoskinson still owns the property and has had several offers from businesses interested in moving into the location. He’s not in a hurry to part with it and was closely vetting interested parties in hopes of finding someone who will also somehow nourish the community."

Every reservation slot at the Newport Beach fixture is booked through its last night of dinner service on March 2.

“After more than five decades along Coast Highway in Newport Beach, the Spaghetti Bender announced that it will close its doors for good on Sunday, March 2.
“Our most humble ‘thank you’ to the staff over the years that helped to make the Bender the best,” read an announcement that owner Michael Hoskinson, posted to Facebook on Wednesday, Feb. 19. “There is not enough room here to list all the amazing employees who made the Spaghetti Bender the success it was.”
Naming some of the staff who have worked at the Newport Beach institution for decades, plaudits went out to chef Alphonso Gomez, “who served us faithfully for over 40 years” after founder and owner Joyce Hoskinson discovered him working at the Huntington Beach Sheraton.
Hoskinson also tipped his hat to longtime employee Janie Barger, “who came to work as a waitress then became our longest serving manager and Britta Pulliam, who rode her bike from Huntington Beach at 14 to work as a salad girl, hostess and waitress, then leaving to build her own award-winning restaurant, Britta’s Cafe.” She later returned after closing her restaurant to help run Spaghetti Bender.
Asked why he decided to shutter his restaurant, Hoskinson explained, “The ultimate reason is that we hit 55 years and we decided to go out on a high note. What else do we have to prove?”
Joyce Hoskinson opened the Spaghetti Bender during the summer of 1969, with her son, Michael, taking over operations after she passed away in 2022. “She’s really the heart and soul of the whole story, because she started this restaurant when she was a single mother back when such a thing wasn’t common,” said Michael during a phone interview. “My mom was a go-getter, and she did a great thing making that restaurant a success.”
The restaurant fed the community for years, with guests ranging from both ends of the pocketbook spectrum, said Hoskinson. “It really was an honest, little family restaurant where rich people would come in for their daily meal, while for people on the lower end of the economic spectrum it would be their special night out,” he said.
Responses from decades-long patrons poured in following the closure announcement. “You all truly deserve the most restful retirement,” replied Nicole Stone. “Thank you for 55 years of the best salad dressing on the planet.” Alvin Lopez remarked, “No one [is] sadder than I. It’s been my second home away from home.”
“It’s just humbling, you know, the way that people think about you and refer to you,” said Michael Hoskinson, who has been on the receiving end of thoughtful and mournful messages from patrons, past and present, since making the announcement.
The Spaghetti Bender was also a must-visit for nostalgia buffs, who enjoyed not only the food (the red-sauce joint served such Italian-American staples as spaghetti and meatballs, gnocchi with marinara, lasagna, saltimbocca, carbonara, lobster ravioli and more) but also its ’70s-era ambiance of red-and-white gingham tablecloths, an Italian mural on the wall and charming window valances.
“I keep joking that it’s a time machine, because you walk in the door and you could be in 1976 when my mom remodeled,” he said.
Michael Hoskinson, who also works in real estate, said he isn’t sure what’s next for the space. “At the moment, we’ve had the property up for sale for a bit, a little less than a year,” he said. “We own the Eat Chow building behind there as well.”
Fans of the Spaghetti Bender, a rarity in a finicky industry that sees restaurants come and go at a brisk pace, have a little time left to pay the stalwart eatery a visit. But take heed: Make your reservations sooner rather than later.
“This weekend is already completely sold out,” he said.”

After decades at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and 62nd Street, the red-sauce joint announced that it will close its doors for good.

The Spaghetti Bender is closing after 55 years!!

Dear Friends,

At the beginning of March 2025 Lorenzo’s Spaghetti Bender will serve its last meal. After 55 years we’ve decided to take a well-deserved rest and close the restaurant.

In early 1969 Joyce Hoskinson and her mother Ailie Pasini were running Joyce’s Cafe (now called the Sugar Shack) in downtown Huntington Beach. Joyce had recently divorced and needed to make a living for her son 4 year-old Michael and her parents, times were tough. One day after serving breakfast Joyce packed her mother and Michael into her car and took a drive down Pacific Coast Hwy. In West Newport she spied a for sale sign on an old Mexican restaurant...she spun a U-turn, called the owner and quickly made a deal to buy the restaurant. Joyce’s father Papa Lorenzo was working in the Merchant Marines, one call brought him back to takeover the kitchen of the newly christened “Spaghetti Bender”. Named after Papa, and the gentle slur against Italian immigrants.

Spaghetti Bender opened in the Summer of Love in June 1969. Business was slow until a local restaurant reviewer had a great meal and wrote an article about it. That began 55 years of continuous dinner service.

In 1976 Joyce rolled the dice again. The business was booming and her busy little restaurant was turning customers away, Joyce knew she needed to expand. She closed the restaurant to completely remodel Spaghetti Bender into the charming building that stands today.

During over 20,000 unbroken days of business we served all of our guests with the same ethic: great food served in a warm and inviting atmosphere, all for a reasonable price.

Our most humble “thank you” to the staff over the years that helped to make The Bender the best. There is not enough room here to list all the amazing employees who made the Spaghetti Bender the success it was. Chef Alphonso, who served us faithfully for over 40 years after Joyce discovered him working the grill at the HB Sheraton. Janie Barger, who came to work as a waitress then became our longest serving manager and Britta Pulliam, who rode her bike from HB at 14 to work as a salad girl, hostess and waitress, then leaving to build her own award-winning restaurant, Britta’s Cafe. After closing her restaurant Britta came back to help Joyce run Spaghetti Bender.

Words cannot express our gratitude for the 55 years of success our family enjoyed in West Newport Beach. Thanks to the nearly 3 generations of customers that made the Spaghetti Bender their home away from home, together we’ve been able to create memories that will last a lifetime.

Love, the Hoskinson, Pasini and Pulliam families
