This is the line at Langer’s and it’s one of our favorite sights in the world.
Locals who’ve been coming for decades. First-timers who read about us somewhere. Families, coworkers, tourists with cameras, folks who drove in from three counties over. Everyone standing on the same sidewalk for the same reason.
Cooling units running, cold water in hand, and a #19 waiting at the end of it. That’s a good way to spend a morning.

Our favorite letter of the year just made the news. 📺
CBS LA picked up the story of Roberto, the guest from El Paso who drove home, couldn’t remember if he’d left a tip, and cared enough to mail us $50 to make sure his server got it. He included every detail he could recall so we’d find the right person.
We did. She got it. And now the whole city knows what kind of guy he is.
Thank you, CBS LA, for sharing it. And thank you, Roberto, for reminding everyone that the small stuff isn’t small at all.

This letter made our whole week.
Roberto drove home from Langer’s a few weeks ago and couldn’t shake one nagging question: did he leave a tip? He was pretty sure he did. Pretty sure wasn’t good enough.
So he wrote to us — from El Paso — and mailed $50 in an envelope, along with every detail he could recall about the booth he sat in and the morning he came, all so we could track down his server. He used to bus tables and wait tables himself. His sister did too. He knows exactly what that money means to the person carrying the plates.
We found her. She got it. And she was floored.
Roberto, thank you for going out of your way to do the right thing when nobody would have known otherwise. Your table’s always ready here.

Some places sell food. Others hold memories.
Look at these walls and you’ll see it: a Dodgers jersey with LANGER on the back, a faded photograph of the deli in its earliest days, a clock that’s been keeping time here longer than most of us have been alive. Nothing here is decoration. Every piece was earned.
Al Langer opened these doors in 1947 with twelve seats and a belief that pastrami done right was worth the effort. Seventy-plus years later, the recipe hasn’t changed, the rye is still double-baked, and the meat is still hand-carved to order. Norm took the reins and kept the standard exactly where his father set it. Now a third generation carries it forward.
In that time, the neighborhood around us has changed more than once. Restaurants have opened and closed by the hundreds. Trends have come and gone. Langer’s stayed — same corner, same counter, same sandwich — because when you get something right, you don’t chase what’s next. You protect what you have.
That’s what legacy really means. Not nostalgia. Not a plaque on the wall. It’s showing up every single day and doing the work the same careful way, so that the sandwich your grandfather loved is the same one your grandkids will order.

LA heat doesn’t stand a chance.
We’re beating it with free ice-cold water for everyone in line, cooling units running right alongside the queue, and a sandwich at the end worth every minute. Hot day, cool crowd — that’s how we do summer at Langer’s.

To get to South Alvarado Street in Los Angeles by public transportation, you can take a metro bus or rail to Union Station and transfer to the DASH Downtown F bus, which will drop you off at the intersection of Alvarado Street and 7th Street. Alternatively, you can take the Metro Purple or Red Line to Westlake/MacArthur Park Station and walk about 10 minutes south on Alvarado Street.
If driving, take the 110 Freeway and exit at 6th Street. Go west on 6th Street and turn right onto Alvarado Street. There is paid street parking available nearby, as well as a parking lot located at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Alvarado Street.
